Presented by FYEG delegate Anna Buccio. The intervention was applauded by NGO participants and delegates.
“My names Anna and I will be 69 in the year 2050.
Mr Chair, John, I have a question for you.
Will you marry me?
Because, as an annex 1 citizen, I love the Kyoto Protocol. And I want to enter into marriage with it to ensure our love is legally recognised.
But true love needs commitment, something we haven’t seen from the Annex I Parties during this week. In fact, we haven’t seen it for the last 4 years, ever since the negotiations on a second commitment period for the Kyoto Protocol started.
We can build commitment gradually, but it starts now with an adequate 2nd commitment
period with Annex I targets that follow the science to keep temperatures below 1,5°.
So this means an aggregate target for Annex I Parties of at least -40% based on 1990, without offsets and loopholes, and an review of its adequacy.
This means everybody must do their share.
It means, we need them to make more ambitious targets public before we meet again.
It means these targets MUST be ambitious enough to enable a 1.5
degrees future.
As we said, true love needs commitment. I want to marry the Kyoto Protocol, I want to enshrine this commitment in law.
If Annex I countries commit, everyone can look forward to their wedding invitation arriving in the post.
But time is not on our side, we need to order the cake.
To do this we need a location, please tell us that we can send the cake to Cancun and hold the wedding ceremony there.
Because I am young, I won’t, we can’t wait for you forever!”
Great speech, congratulations!
